Chainmail was already used in ancient times by Celts, Romans (so-called lorica hamata) and Persians. It was one of the basic types of armor. It appeared in Poland as early as the ninth century. It was used by armored men from the princely team of Mieszko I.

The medieval European chain mail was available in many varieties, and its typeface has changed significantly throughout history.

  • 9th-11th century: a form of tunic extending beyond the knees, sleeves up to the elbows, hood and legs; there are three slits – front and back to facilitate mounting a horse and to the left to draw a sword
  • 11th century: chain mail is lengthened, lap reaches halfway to the calf, relatively long slit at the front and back makes it easier to mount a horse
  • 12th century: long-sleeved chainmail gloves with gloves at the end began to be used. Legs protection is started by chainmail legs. There is also often a collar around the neck, shoulders, shoulders and upper part of the torso.
  • 13th century, 2nd half: chainmail hoods are a separate part of chainmail fastened with a string on the left cheek
  • 2nd half Fourteenth century: relatively fast displacement of chain mail by plate armor, giving much better protection to the knight’s body
