Underpants with a rather tight cut, can be associated with modern boxers, and historically they were used in the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Worn under late hose and pants. This is one of the basic elements of historical attire, however, contrary to appearances, in the past it was not as widely used as it is today. Visible in many medieval sources, among others, they can be found in the Hutter Bible from around 1415 from Kraków, the Altar of Grudziądz from around 1390 and in Decameron from the Paris Bibliothèque de l’Arsenal from around 1430-40.
Do not be fooled by medieval images where you can see snow-white underwear even on peasants and the worst knave. Natural linen will brighten over time, especiallywhen exposed sunlight. Iconography should always be looked at with caution and deeper understanding.
Like all our clothing it can be hand or machine stiched. However, we always follow the principle to finish visible elements manually.
